Protect Your Business and Your People With the Right HR Foundations

Taking on your first member of staff is one of the biggest milestones in running a small business. But without the right contracts, policies, and procedures in place, it can quickly become one of the biggest headaches too. A lot of small business owners don't realise how exposed they are until something goes wrong. We help sole traders and growing businesses across Cornwall get their HR foundations right from the start, so they're protected, compliant, and set up to build a team that actually works.

Small Businesses Underestimate HR.
Until It's Too Late.

It's one of the most common things we see. A business owner takes on a member of staff, things start well, and then something goes wrong. Maybe it's a performance issue. Maybe it's a dispute about hours or pay. Maybe someone just decides to leave without notice. And when it happens, they realise they have nothing in writing to fall back on.

Getting your HR basics right isn't complicated, but it does need to be done properly. And with employment law continuing to tighten, particularly for smaller businesses, there's never been a more important time to make sure you're covered.

Contracts That Actually Protect You

We come across small businesses all the time that don't have proper contracts in place for their staff. Some have nothing at all. Others have something they found online that doesn't reflect how their business actually works.

An employment contract isn't just a legal requirement. It's the document everything else is built on. It sets out hours, pay, responsibilities, notice periods, and a whole lot more. When it's done properly, it protects your business and gives your employees clarity and confidence. We'll make sure yours does exactly that.

Staff Handbooks That Set the Right Tone

A good staff handbook does more than list the rules. It tells people what kind of business they've joined, what's expected of them, and what they can expect in return. Done well, it's one of the best tools you have for reducing misunderstandings and keeping your team on the same page.

We'll create a handbook that's clear, readable, and specific to your business. Not a lengthy legal document full of language no one will ever read, but something your team will actually refer to and that you can stand behind with confidence.

Building Processes That Make Managing People Easier

One of the hardest parts of growing a small business is shifting from doing everything yourself to leading a team. A lot of business owners struggle with it, not because they're not good leaders, but because they've never had the structures in place to make it straightforward.

Having clear HR processes, things like probation reviews, performance check-ins, and a consistent approach to dealing with issues, takes a lot of the guesswork out of managing people. It means you're not making things up on the spot when something difficult comes up, and your team knows exactly where they stand.

Staff Retention Starts With
Getting the Basics Right

High staff turnover is one of the biggest drains on a small business. Recruiting, training, and losing people costs time and money that most small businesses can't afford to waste. And very often, the root cause isn't pay or working conditions. It's a lack of clarity, consistency, and structure.

When your team has clear contracts, knows what's expected of them, and feels like the business is being run properly, they're far more likely to stay. Getting the HR foundations right isn't just about compliance. It's about building a team you can rely on for the long term.

That word, invested, is worth paying attention to. It's not something you get from a generic HR template or an online legal service. It's what happens when someone genuinely cares whether your business succeeds.

This service is a great fit if you are:

  • A sole trader who is taking on their first employee and wants to make sure everything is done properly
  • A small business owner who has staff but no formal contracts or handbook in place
  • Someone who has had a difficult experience with a staff member and wants to make sure it doesn't happen again
  • A growing business that needs to formalise its HR processes as the team expands
  • Anyone who just wants the peace of mind that comes with knowing their people processes are watertight

If any of that sounds familiar, let's have a conversation.

Common Questions About Working With Us

Do I need a written contract for every member of staff?
Yes. Employees are legally entitled to a written statement of their main terms and conditions from their first day of work. Without one, you're leaving yourself open to disputes that are very difficult to resolve without anything in writing to refer back to.
My staff member has been working for me for a while without a contract. Is it too late to sort one?
It's never too late, and it's always better to have something in place than nothing at all. We can help you put a contract together that works for your current situation and makes sure you're covered going forward.
What should a staff handbook include?
At a minimum, it should cover things like working hours, holiday entitlement, sickness and absence procedures, disciplinary and grievance processes, and your expectations around conduct and performance. We'll make sure nothing important gets missed and that everything is appropriate for the size and type of your business.
I've found contract templates online. Do I really need something bespoke?
Generic templates are better than nothing, but they're often outdated, overly complex, or simply not relevant to your business. A contract that doesn't reflect how you actually operate can cause more problems than it solves. We'll make sure yours is accurate, current, and specific to you.
How do I deal with a staff issue if I've never had to do it before?
This is where having the right processes in place really helps. We'll make sure you've got a clear and consistent approach to things like performance management and disciplinary situations so that if something comes up, you know exactly how to handle it and you're doing it properly.
With employment law changing, how do I keep up?
It's a fair concern, especially for smaller businesses. We stay on top of changes that affect our clients and will flag anything that's relevant to you. If your contracts or policies need updating as a result of new legislation, we'll let you know and help you sort it.
